An estimated 4% of the total waste generated in the country comes from textile waste. Despite being recycled or repurposed, these waste materials has seen lesser recycling efforts compared to paper, plastic and cans due to low awareness.

On a daily basis, approximately 2,000 tonnes of textile waste are generated, further aggravating the many overflowing landfills in Malaysia. With this environmental problem in mind, Sunway Putra Mall initiated a campaign to raise textile waste recycling awareness through their Mid-Autumn 2017 celebration.

Partnering with Kloth Cares, the mall created a 10.5m high lantern made from recycled fabrics, earning them an entry into the Malaysia Book of Records for the Tallest Lantern Made of Recycled Fabric.

A lantern parade was also organised to maximise exposure to the community, which saw a gathering of more than 1,000 multiracial participants and tourists including 300 underprivileged children. The campaign also aims to uphold the uniqueness of the diverse cultures in Malaysia.

For its innovative approach, the mall was named the winner of the 2018 International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Foundation Asia-Pacific Community Support Award during the ICSC Asia-Pacific Shopping Centers Awards recently; the sole winner among all malls in Asia-Pacific.

The win also enabled a USD10,000 (RM41,685) grant by ICSC to be channeled to Kloth Cares, an organisation that aims to address the challenges with fabric and textile waste, and gather university students to further support their cause.

ICSC president and CEO Tom McGee presented the award to Sunway Putra Mall general manager Phang Sau Lian in the presence of 300 Asia Pacific’s mall and retail industry players.

Sunway Malls & Theme Parks CEO, HC Chan said the win was indeed a great achievement for Sunway Malls and Malaysia’s mall industry. “We like to thank the ICSC for their recognition as we continue to progress not only as a lifestyle shopping mall, but also in creating value with the community around us.”

“The ICSC Foundation Community Support Award recognition sets another milestone for Sunway Putra Mall, despite being only just over three years in operation after the refurbishment. This further uplifts our positioning in Malaysia,” Phang added.

Now eligible to compete among other region winners next year for the prestigious Albert Sussman International Community Support Award, Sunway Putra Mall stands to win an additional USD15,000 (RM62,527.50) grant presented at RECon Las Vegas 2019.
