Wholesale, retail trade sales up 10.7% to RM107.9b in August

PETALING JAYA: Sales of wholesale and retail trade reported a double-digit growth of 10.7% to RM107.9 billion in August 2018 compared with the same period last year, attributable to retail trade and motor vehicles, according to the Department of Statistics (DoS).

Sales of wholesale trade increased 7.4% to RM50.9 billion, while retail trade rose 14.8% driven by sales in specialised stores, non specialised  stores  and  information  &  communication  equipment  in specialised stores, in line with consumers   took   advantage  of  the  tax  holiday period. 

Sales of motor vehicles continued to record a double-digit growth for three consecutive months by registering 10.6% in August 2018 with sales value of RM13.5 billion.

“The expansion in the sales was mainly due to zero-rated implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) before the reintroduction of Sales and Services Tax (SST) on September 1, 2018,” said DoS.
