PETALING JAYA: A total of 8,165 Malaysians came together at Sunway City to pledge their support for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).

They formed groups in the city’s key locations, including Monash University, Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Hotel and Sunway Pyramid to hold hands in support of the goals.

The number-8,165 represents the nautical miles from Sunway University to the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The event was held to mark third anniversary of the launch UNSDG.

Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah spoke on Goal 1 on poverty, at Sunway University, the centrestage for the event.

“Poverty is more than the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood.Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision- making,” said Tengku Amir.

The founding trustee of The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah pledged his support at the event.

“Today across Sunway City, 8,165 people have come together and joined hands to make a pledge in support of the United Nations Development Goals and for that I am both delighted and grateful,” he said.
