KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) is committed to producing a “Regional Champion” company among local vendors through the Bumiputera Vendor Development Program (BVDP) this year.

The company is optimistic that this can be implemented through the collaboration between the vendors and local as well as international companies.

TM is one of the anchor companies, responsible to produce vendors who are champions at the national, regional and international levels.

TM group chief procurement officer Mohamad Mohamad Zain said to date, more than 400 vendors have been equipped with training and development, skills upgrading programs as well as access to the market.

“Currently, 105 vendors are participating in the program. So far, TM has developed two vendors into becoming National Champions,” he said at a media briefing on the Bumiputera Vendor Development Program (BVDP) here.

The National Champions developed by TM include Binaan Desjaya Sdn Bhd and Lite Kabel Sdn Bhd.

Through the BVDP program, TM has awarded a total of almost RM7 billion worth of contracts to Bumiputera vendors from 2014 to 2017.

For the same period, a total of over RM2 billion in revenue was generated by the vendors, he added.

Mohamad said under the TM BVDP, it has created more than 8,000 job opportunities.

Meanwhile, International Trade and Industry director for small and medium enterprise Khairulnizam Hashi said it aims to produce at least one Global, three Regional and 10 National Champion companies among entrepreneurs through the Vendor Development and Empowerment Program (PPV), this year.

“Last year, a total of 21 anchor companies joined PPV and successfully appointed a total of 1,418 vendors.

“Thanks to the participation of the anchor companies, the vendors managed to record a turnover of RM30.44 billion,” he said.
