Tesco Malaysia, in partnership with advertising agency Grey Malaysia, recently launched an “Unforgettable Bags” campaign in a bid to reduce single-use plastic bags.

Though the bags look quite like the average plastic bag, the Unforgettable Bags are made of recyclable material, yet more durable in comparison to the usual.

Launched ahead of World Earth Day celebrated on Apr 22, the bags come in three unique designs. Each depict an ocean creature facing extinction because of the appalling, voluminous amounts of plastic waste in its habitat.

“Conscious of our environment, we are always looking for ways to help our customers to reduce their single-use plastic bag consumption from implementing ‘No Plastic Bags’ on Saturdays. We do this by encouraging them (customers) to trolley their purchases directly to their cars. We also incentivise customers with Green Clubcard points, which are redeemable as shopping vouchers, for every time they shop with reusable bags,” said Tesco Malaysia CEO Paul Ritchie.

“By launching the Unforgettable Bag, we hope to provide a gentle reminder to all our shoppers on why they need to always bring their reusable bags when they shop with us.”

Each Unforgettable Bag has a barcode designed into the ocean creature illustration. Customers who remember to bring their bag when shopping at Tesco, will have their bag scanned at the cashier and awarded a 20 sen rebate on their purchase. The rebate is valid until Dec 31 and applies to a maximum of two bags per transaction/bill.

“We have halved the number of single-use plastic bags given out in our stores between 2011 and 2017, but the rate of reduction is not fast enough. We hope that we’re able to accelerate the reduction of plastic bag use in our operations.

“Our aim is to further halve the number of plastic bags this year through the Unforgettable Bag campaign,” Ritchie informed.

Each Unforgettable Bag is sold at only 50 sen. Customers can claim a free replacement if their bag is worn out, torn or damaged during the campaign period, which ends Dec 31, 2018.

Unforgettable Bags are currently available at Tesco stores in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, until they’re rolled out nationwide on June 1. The campaign ends on Dec 31, 2018.
