CYBERJAYA: As the nation awaits with baited breath for the Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) to officially go live tomorrow, five investors are already in talks with the Malaysian government to further develop Port Klang in Selangor and Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah as e-commerce hub, said Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

Its chief executive officer Datuk Yasmin Mahmood told the New Straits Times that the development plans for a northern e-commerce hub would be brought forward due to the strong investors’ confidence in the multi-million project.

“Because of the interest level, we are bringing forward the plans to integrate with Port Klang. Bukit Kayu Hitam will be developed to serve the southern region of Thailand,” Yasmin said. “We can start talking to the investors (about the expansion plans) in six months.”

However, she declined to divulge more details on the five investors and the total investment value involved.

She said the investors comprised both local and global industry players.

“They are locals and global players who originated from the Western market. They want to capitalise in the growth of e-commerce in the Asian market.

“They are people who want to use Malaysia as the regional e-commerce transhipmet hub,” she said.

The first phase of the DFTZ will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Alibaba Group founder, Jack Ma in the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) tomorrow.

Announced in March this year, the DFTZ – located in the KLIA Aeropolis is the first outside of China that will facilitate Malaysian SMEs to export their products to China and subsequently, around the world through a holistic e-commerce trading experience.

With 600 million projected customer base once the DFTZ fully takes off in 2019, the initiative is expected to boost the e-commerce contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) to RM211 billion by 2020.
